Does Your Child Have This Common Childhood Disorder?

Children's Dentistry | Northport NY

As parents, we want our kids to have the happiest, most positive childhood possible. We instinctively shield them from negative experiences now because we know they will have enough of them to face later in life!

You ensure your child's health by taking them to the doctor for checkups and routine immunizations. But there's one important aspect of their health you may not give a lot of thought to, and that's the condition of their teeth.

How Poor Oral Health Affects Your Child

The Centers for Disease Control reports that dental caries (tooth decay) is the number one chronic childhood illness in children between the ages of 6 and 11. Tooth decay is just as painful for kids as it is for adults and needs to be addressed as quickly as possible.

Short-term consequences of poor oral health in kids are difficulty eating, sleeping, speaking, and functioning well at home and in school. The long-term consequences of untreated tooth decay are infected gums and ultimately tooth loss.

Routine Childhood Visits

The good news is that tooth decay is highly preventable. Just like adults, children need to learn proper oral hygiene habits. They will need your assistance until they are about six years old, and your dentist will be happy to show you the proper technique.

You should schedule routine checkups for your child just as you would for yourself. Even if the dentist does not need to perform any treatment, these visits are the perfect opportunity to ask questions about supporting your child's oral health.

A healthy diet is also a major contributing factor to the health of your child's mouth. Avoid sugary foods and drinks that linger on your child's teeth and cause cavities. Do some research and learn what healthy snacks, like cheese and yogurt, also benefit your child's overall health.
